UAE PORT SALE TAKING A LIFE OF ITS OWN

Presidential Press Secretary Scott McClellan stated today that the Bush administration should have clarified to Congress and the American people the sale of operations of six major U.S. ports. That is an under statement. One contention that I have had with the President is the fact that instead of using the , "Bully Pulpit, " to speak to the people he allows situations to basically run the gambit of political and media coverage. McClellan said that the administration did not see the political fall out that this has caused. Though greater detail about the sale by the administration could have prevented much of the fall out, I still have my doubts about the acquisition. As I have looked into this sale in more detail my initial thoughts that this would become a major terrorist problem as far as using the ports a venues to launch attacks have subsided. I initially pictured turban clad Arabs driving fork lifts which held possible threats to the country. Now this vision is a bit of an exaggeration but I also believe that this is the picture that most Americans have concerning the sale. The Coast Guard and current long shore man will continue to operate facilities as they have always done while the ports were under British control. Yes, the ports nationwide are handled by state and federal port authorities but operational control of every port is handled by other countries. Operation control is the loading and unloading of the millions of containers the leave and enter our ports on a daily basis. This is what the UAE will have control over if the sale is allowed to go through. I do not believe that the sale should be put on hold simply because it involves Arabs as has been indicated by Chuck Schumer and Hillary Clinton in a form of racial profiling. My contention and my reason for opposing this move is simply this. Though nothing from an operational stand point would change at any of the ports including U.S. jobs, this acquisition would allow the UAE access to vital security information that is used to protect our ports and much of our travel and shipping industries. Gaining access to this vital security information would be necessary in order to handle containers in a secure and expedient way. This in my opinion poses a problem because of past involvement of the UAE in terrorist activities. Yes they are now an ally in the War on Terror and have been very helpful both in the war and in servicing our Naval vessels in the port of Dubai. This does not prevent the infiltration of Al Qaeda or any other terrorist organization from entering the United States as management in the UAE company and thus gaining access to vital security information and passing it along to sleeper cells or those planning attacks from over seas. That is my main concern and unless through an exhaustive investigation this possibility can be unequivocally proven impossible then this sale should NOT happen. I realize that the with drawl of this sale could damage relations with Arab nations but our National Security is more important than relations with any country whether Arab or any other nationality. Remember we have placed spies from friendly nations in prison for using their friendly status to pass secret information to their countries and I see this UAE sale as the possible opening of a flood gate of security information falling into hands that have designs on our destruction.

Amen brother! We actually agree on your key point.

I have to correct you on one point. While many U.S. ports are owned and operated by foreign entities, contrary to what you state, there are many ports in the U.S. that have no foreign ownership or control of operations. San Diego and Stockton come to mind off the top of my head.

Certainly you don't mean to say that Schumer and Clinton are the only ones who are concerned because the sale is to an Arab nation (and that they are engaging in racial profiling). Are any of the critics - Republican or Democrat - against this deal for any other reason?

You seem to be "racial profiling" just like every other critic by what you write in the latter half of your post. I agree with you and think racial profiling is appropriate given the national security implications of this situation. How and why you seem to think you are not engaging in racial profiling is not clear to me.

Can we stop arabs, or people of middle-eastern looks from coming into the US? Turn them right around at the borders, ports, airports?

I'm much less concerned with offending Arabs than protecting the country.

Statements about the company not being a threat are a crock of crap.....AND BUSH KNOWS IT!!!

Especially, considering the Dubai company has recently added to the deal, adding two ports in Texax as well.......TWO MILITARY PORTS.

This is insane, and Bush better pull his head out. If he doesn't Congress will rip it out for him.

Yep. We sure can - and do - if there is evidence of terrorism. Hell, Bush can lock up a suspect and throw away the key.

UAE has a clear history of support for terrorism so there is no reason to risk national security by giving them control of 6 major ports of entry.

I still don't know. More info is needed in my opinion. I agree with many members of Congress in that some kind of hearing is needed here, plus further investigation.

One question that I believe needs to be asked. Has the UAE used their ports to help terrorists in the past? We know they have helped finance terrorists in the past, but if they haven't used their ports, chances are they won't in the future.

-The UAE did capture, arrest, and hand over the mastermind of the USS Cole bombing.

-They have done repairs on US ships. (Back to 1997)

-They offer liberty to US sailors in the region.

Now I will offend anyone to protect the US! The one thing you don't do is offend a country which has helped us.

Oh yeah, you are right! I am now enlightened and see the clarity and brilliance of your argument. Come on America, let's just give them the opportunity to run the ports and see what happens. What's the worst that could happen?

Hey goldilocks how goes the ultra neo conservative lemming rant?

The extremists that want to create a clash of civilizations see greater statistical significance in attacking the infidels business partners, particularly the ports currently under scrutiny.

The ports are by far the most vulnerable access points to protect the nation. Check the statistics regarding the seizure of contraband and there should be a massive spike in the figures corresponding to the billions of dollars you have invested in security. You will notice there is no spike, no record seizures.

It is in the interests of the extremists to target these particular Dubai controlled ports.

It's not just that you should be solely afraid of extremists getting jobs with access to these areas, the extremists will want to use the point of access to smuggle things in as well as to attack the ports in particular.

This is a title fight for the freedom of the world. Does america really have impenetrable security at these particular points and is it through these particular ports america wants to draw the extremists into attacking? america has the most potent counter attack the world has ever seen, once it gets political approval.

The idea is to win a war convincingly and with as few casualties as possible. GOD doesn't need any stupid soldiers. Over thousands of years there have been few battles fought by military experts without political interference.

bush is a war president, he is no military genius, he is only as good as those feeding him what to say, Quagmire. Lots of other military experts would have gone into Iraq heavy, really heavy and put lots of boots on the ground but you will never see fox question any of the strategy that has thus far been implemented.

The strategy implemented has cost more american lives, created more terrorists, and put american lives in more jeopardy. Is this where and how america wants to see the battle evolve?

As an american you must begin to wonder if the ultra neo cons are trying to bait another hit on the homeland to retaliate again. Allow another 911 like attack to initiate a more respectable war effort than that which you have produced after 911.

saddam was your boy, bin laden was your creation, pinochet, noriega, marcos, etc., etc., etc..

america is the largest sponsor of terrorists in the history of the world in total number of dollars spent, total number of terrorists created, total number of casualties inflicted.

How are you going to close pandora's box?
